One, Another, Other, Others

Quando usar one, another, other e others é uma pergunta muito frequente entre alunos de nível básico. Então vamos esclarecer:

1. One + of + the/possessivo(my, your...)

- One of the students in my class was sick today.

- My teacher is talking to one of my friends.

- One flight leaves at five p.m. and the other at nine. (Um voo parte às 17h e o outro às 21h)

- There are two flights. One leaves at 5 p.m. and the other leaves at nine. (Há dois voos. Um parte às 17h...)

- Would you like another drink?

- Let´s go to another restaurant for a change. (Vamos a um outro restaurante para variar.)

- Can I ask you another question?

- Did you like the restaurant? -  No, let´s go to another one (= another restaurant)

- Is that chair comfortable?  - No, I need another one, please. (= another chair)

3.Other: quer dizer outro, outra.

- He has two sisters. One lives in Canada and his other sister lives in Brazil.
(Ele tem duas irmãs. Uma mora no Canada e a a outra irmã dele mora no Brasil.)

- He´s got two homes - one is in London and the other one is in São Paulo.

- Do you know any other city in Brazil apart from Rio de Janeiro?
(Você conhece alguma outra cidade no Brasil além do Rio de Janeiro?)

- Some students are interested in sports and others are interested in music.

- We arrived first and the others came later.

- This test is ok. Let´s check the others.
